Russell Westbrook
Rebrand Concept

Russell Westbrook is an NBA icon. I once heard someone say, "If you don’t like Russell Westbrook, then you don’t like Basketball." I could not agree more, watching Westbrook be incredibly athletic and amazingly efficient on the court has been a treat to watch. There’s so much to like about Russell as a player, but I’m equally as fascinated by him as an entrepreneur and an off the court symbol.

His foundation focuses on giving back to under-served communities and especially in his hometown, Los Angeles. He founded the Why Not? Foundation to help inspire youth with the mindset that he adopted as a child. The foundation hosts holiday drives and most recently has announced that it will build the Why Not? Academy. I love that Westbrook has made it a priority to use his success to help others and inspire young people.

You see that priority in his clothing line, which he serves as Creative Director. A role that I think fits him perfectly because of his bold and unique eye for fashion. His fashion line also has an element of giving back, by honoring Westbrook’s roots in the inner city.

Through a concept collaboration with his agency Wasserman, I developed a concept for Westbrook inspired by his actions, his game and the selfless, creative, fashionable persona that sets him apart from the rest of the league.

Research

When tackling a branding project, I always begin with exploring the brand space we are entering. In this case, the NBA. Here are some of the top players’ logos. The re-brand should be unique to Westbrook but should take into account the rest of the league and the applications.
